Having completed our staycation, I can say wholeheartedly (I know Mr R backs me up on this), never again!!! Yes we were lucky to have glorious weather for the majority of our time off, and yes we had a few days out, and have both returned to work feeling refreshed. However, you can’t escape people when you’re at home, namely my Mother-in-law, and one of our neighbours, unless we stayed holed up indoors 24/7.
Now don’t get me wrong, I get on extremely well with my MIL and have no issue helping her just as I would my own Mother, but the first part of our break was used on Mr R taking down the fence in her back garden, digging out rock solid ground before erecting a new, wooden fence complete with concrete posts and gravel boards. Mr R is not a fencer (or whatever the correct job title is), and when you have a hundred foot garden it’s not a 5 minute job – 4 days!! Ok, it sounds selfish of me to be complaining when it wasn’t me doing the work, but I know how tired Mr R is from his regular job and he needed this time to chill out, not be grafting when it was so hot outside (and do some DIY at home 😉 ). Then there’s THE neighbour, who only talks to you when she wants something, needing help first with her laptop then her Sky box, then trying to get us to take her shopping. We wouldn’t mind if she was a sweet old lady, or anyone else nice to be honest, but she’s actually not old and is quite horrible about people then wonders why people don’t befriend her – goodness knows what she says about us when we’re not flavour of the month; I can only imagine based on what she says to us about the other neighbours when they haven’t done what she wants! Oh and if we didn’t answer the door we had a note shoved through the letterbox telling us what she wanted us for and what time she would be expecting us hmmm…
That aside, and rant over!! We did have a nice break, and it was good to have some time to get things done around the house and in the garden. We didn’t really miss the pool or beach too much, nor not having food and drinks on tap as we would with an all inclusive holiday. However, unless we can have a staycation with no external sources dictating our time then it’s always going to be a vacation for us.
Oh, one bonus of a staycation, no pile of dirty clothes to wash at the end of it, but that’s just because you’ve done it all throughout the week anyway. Maybe not such a bonus after all lol!!
